Poland salvage pride with win over Costa Rica

Though both teams have failed to qualify for the finals, the Poles have managed a third position in their group after Tuesday's 2-1 victory.

Poland salvaged some pride from their abortive World Cup campaign by beating Costa Rica 2-1 in a final Group A match on Tuesday between two teams already out of contention for the knockout stage.

Poland, who had to come from behind after Ronald Gomez gave Costa Rica the lead in the 25th minute, levelled in the 33rd minute through defender Bartosz Bosacki, who also scored the winner in the 66th.

They were Bosacki's first goals for his country.

Both teams had lost their first two group games to Germany and Ecuador, who had already qualified for the second round. Poland go home as third in the group and Costa Rica finished last with no points.
