Police constable accuses CPI(M) leader of rape

A 27-year-old lady constable was allegedly raped by a 45-year-old man in Midnapore town on Saturday.

A 27-year-old lady constable was allegedly raped by a 45-year-old man in Midnapore town on Saturday.

The accused Azizul Rahman Khan, a small-time local CPI(M) leader, was arrested on Monday. He was produced before the court and sent to police custody for three days.

Sources said that the victim used to stay in a rented house at Nepali para close to police lines in Midnapore town. She hails from a village in Garbetta in West Midnapore. According to the complaint, on Saturday night when she was alone in the house, the man raped her. She lodged a complaint on Sunday.

“We have arrested the man on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim. The woman was sent for medical test. Investigation is on,” said Bharati Ghosh, SP, West Midnapore district.

Locals said that Khan was known to the victim and they had seen him coming to her house several times earlier.

Police sources said that Khan was known to the victim as he had helped her in treating her father. This is probably the first time that a lady police personnel has alleged rape.
