THE POLICE on Tuesday refused to register a case against former chief minister Digvijay Singh who had allegedly beaten up a man after he intercepted his cavacade in Ujjain on Monday.
The police instead advised the complainant, Anil Chandel, to approach a court. Superintendent of police Jaideep Prasad said no major injury - internal or external – had been reported in Anil Chandel’s medical examination. Hence the police concluded that it was a non cognizance offence and does not merit police intervention, Prasad said. Chandel has been advised under section 155 of the CrPC to approach the court directly, he added.
Anil Chandel said a case under section 323 of the IPC, which relates to scuffle, should be registered on his complaint and alleged that the police are not doing this due to political influence. He said he would lodge a private complaint before the court.
Digvijay Singh reportedly hit Chandel on his face on Monday after a group of Kshatriya community members led by Chandel blocked his car and asked him not to attend a Kshatriya Mahasabha meeting. The demonstrators had shown black flags and intercepted Singh’s vehicle.
