The naxalites of CPI (Maoist) attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrol party in Murangal jungle near Bhamragarh in Gadchiroli district, bordering Chhattisgarh, on Tuesday morning.
According to reports reaching here, the incident occurred at around 7.30 am when a group of armed CRPF jawans were on their routine patrolling in the area. The red rebels, who were hiding in the jungle, suddenly opened fire at them. The CRPF retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for around half an hour, reports said.
The district administration immediately sent additional CRPF and the state police forces in the area to strengthen the CRPF team engaged in action.
Police said the encounter between the naxalite and the security personnel took place in Murangal jungle under Lahiri police station, adjacent Maoist stronghold of Abjujhmad region of Bastar in Chhattisgarh.
The deputy inspector general of police (DIG), Gadchiroli, Ravindra Kadam, did not rule out some naxalite casualties. “The CRPF jawans saw few naxalites carrying the injured cadres,” he said and claimed that no one was injured from the CRPF side.
This is the third major Maoist offensive this month against the security personnel in the district after it attacked a police party near Aheri, bordering Andhra Pradesh last week. The ultra-Leftists had also killed a former sarpanch in the district last week.
A woman naxal was also killed a couple of days ago in the district in an encounter in Ambapur forest under Ghot police station in central Gadchiroli. A woman naxal commander of Kasansur squad, Riki alias Lakhsmi (25) was gunned down by the security personnel in the district in exchange of firing on November 25 this year.
