At present, the anti-vehicle theft squad has only 10 members, but soon the strength will be double, a senior police official said, adding that on an average six vehicles are being stolen from the city every day.

“Police are determined to control the menace and have taken the decision to work on this,” Gurgaon police commissioner SS Deswal said.

This year, a total of 862 cases of vehicle theft have been reported so far. The figure went up to 2,449 last year, which was higher than 1,898, the number of incidents reported a year ago. The police claimed to have solved around 140 cases this year.

Usually, the gun-toting snatchers and thieves strike at night, however, carjacking cases have been also been reported even during day time.

“A number of gangs are active in Gurgaon. We nabbed several carjackers in the past few months,” Gurgaon police commissioner SS Deswal said.

Recently, three unidentified youth robbed an Innova car belonging to a private company in the MG Road area.
