Polio drive: 13 health officials suspended

FAMILY WELFARE Minister Ahmed Hasan said 13 employees of the Medical Health Department had been suspended on the charge of gross negligence in the polio immunisation drive.

With 12 fresh polio cases being reported in two months, Hasan said more heads would likely to roll within a few days. The file regarding action against errant officer was with Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and the suspension order would be released after April 9 when the immunization drive was over, he said.

Hasan said employees had been suspended in Moradabad (5), Budaun (3), Bareilly (1), Farrukhabad (3) and Bulandshahar (1). Polio cases had been reported in these districts and a high level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary, Family Welfare PK Mishra to review the situation.

“We will not hesitate to take action against the officers who has lackadaisical attitude toward the polio drive. The government has pumped in large money and resources in the programme,” he said. Addressing media persons on Friday, Hasan said the polio immunization drive was being organised since a decade.

“We have to keep the interest of the people in the programme and urge the parents to ensure that their children were administered polio drops in each programme,” he said.

Hasan said that the Family Welfare Department would set up 1.06 lakh booths and 3.18 lakh vaccinators had been deputed for the programme. For home-to-home visit, 58,915-vaccinators had been constituted. Mobile team would also administer polio drops to the children at the Railway stations and bus stands, he said.

The Family Welfare Department has also organised polio panchayats in the sensitive districts like Moradabad, Budaun, Bareilly, Bulandshar, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, JP Nagar, Bijnore, Baghpat and Rampur.
