Star spin bowler of yesteryears Bishen Singh Bedi said nothing is wrong with the Indian cricket team and the hue and cry by the country's politicians is nothing but an attempt to gain political mileage.
"The politicians have no business to poke their nose into the performance of the Indian team. They should mind their own business," said Bedi.
"There are times when the team's performance dips. And when it dips it dips. You can't help it."
The Indian team, currently on a South African tour, was dismissed for a paltry 91 runs in the second one-day international drawing criticism from several quarters with politicians being the most vocal.
They demanded that coach Greg Chappell be sacked, forcing Board of Control for Cricket in India chief, Sharad Pawar to ask chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar to head for South Africa to help out the team.
"This is unfair. The coach has a contract till the end of the World Cup and he should be given a chance," said Bedi, who was part of India's lethal spin quartet that included E.A.S. Prasanna, S. Venkataraghavan and B. Chandrasekhar.
"Why are they (the politicians) not objecting to India's poor performances in other sports? If that is done and due attention taken, there can really be a giant leap in the performance levels," said the outspoken left-arm spinner, who took 266 Test wickets in 67 matches.
