The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) made hay of its first election when the total property tax collection crossed a whopping Rs 2 crore, sources revealed. It was mandatory for a candidate as well as for the proposer to pay property tax before filing the nominations.
This clause has worked wonders for the civic agency as 1,500 more people were made to pay property taxes in May.
This is just the beginning. Now, the corporation has started the process of recovering the tax from commercial establishments such as malls, shops, pubs, bars and cinema halls. There are around 2,500 commercial establishments in Gurgaon, which are expected to fetch Rs 30-40 crore as per a rough estimate. They are in Udyog Vihar, MG Road, Sectors 34 and 37 among others.
After collecting revenue from the commercial and industrial establishments, the corporation will go for residential property owners.
Even though there are around 2,85,000 residential units but the revenue collection is expected to touch R150 crore, said the sources.
“The total projected property tax collection is around Rs 200 crore. Majority of the tax assesses are residential, but the tax amount per unit is very small. Commercial and industrial properties which are about 2,500, are the main target for us as these properties only can fetch us about Rs 50 crore. Therefore, we are soon going to serve property tax notices/bills to all the commercial and industrial units,” said an MCG official.

He further said that the number of property owners who have paid the tax were about 46,000 and just 2-3 of them
were from the commercial category.
