Under fire from the common man, the government, immediately after the killing of a youth in protest over power crisis on Monday, annouced that it has decided to put into operation two gas turbines for relief of the people.
“The power development department (PDD) has been directed by chief minister Omar Abdullah to put into operation gas turbines immediately to give relief to the people,” said power development commissioner MA Salroo.
The PDD has requested the people to minimize the consumption of electricity as per agreement to avoid over-heating and consequent burning of the distribution transformers.
Salroo said the chief minister Omar last week conveved a review meeting of the status of essential supplies, including power supply to Kashmir valley. “The PDD has ensured that energy supply to Kashmir valley is significantly increased to give immediate relief to the common man from severe winter conditions prevailing in the valley,” said Saloora.
On an average, 850 MW electricity was being supplied to Kashmir valley. “Now electricity supply level has gone upto 951 MW and the effort of the PDD would be to increase it to 1100 MW in coming days,” said Saloora.
“Since 10% more electricity is being supplied to the valley, the PDD has been directed to ensure that no unscheduled power cuts are resorted to and schedule of curtailment is strictly adhered to minimize inconvenience to the people,” said the officer.
