The MSEDCL, however, did not disconnect power supply of district collector office that has unpaid electricity bill of over Rs 1.5 lakh in view of coming elections. The MSEDCL officials warned the district collectorate authorities that if they fail to pay the amount within the next two days, they too would face the music. "We have given the relaxation to the collectorate on an assurance by the concerned officials of paying the amount in the next two days," informed MSEDCL junior engineer PS Thakre.

According to him, among the major defaulters were: the water supply department which owes Rs 1.32 lakh, while an outstanding of Rs 43,000 and Rs 24,000 were recovered from deputy collector (anti-encroachment) and PWD departments, respectively.

The state machinery faced earlier, similar embarrassment when the electricity supply of Ramgiri, the official residence of Maharashtra chief minister in Nagpur was disconnected for non-payment of outstanding bills.
