A group of residents on Sunday held a prayer meet at the Delhi-Gurgaon border toll plaza to pay tributes to all those who lost their lives in accidents on the expressway in the last four years.
Between January 2008 and July 2012, a total of 369 people were killed along the 27-km stretch from Delhi’s Rao Tula Ram Marg to Gurgaon’s Kherki Daula. As many as 16 out of the total 38 people killed in the last seven months were pedestrians.
Sunday’s prayer meet and havan were organised by the Toll Hatao Sangharsh Samiti as mark of protest against expressway management firm, DGSCL (Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity Ltd).
The protesters said the agency concerned had failed to provide adequate facilities for motorists and pedestrians, leading to several fatal accidents.
“We performed this havan to pay homage to the accident victims,” said Attar Singh Sandhu, coordinator of Toll Hatao Sangharsh Samiti. According to traffic police, several pedestrians have lost their lives while crossing roads due to lack of adequate number of crossover facilities such as foot over bridge (FOBs) and subways.
“If the FOBs and underpasses were there, several lives could have been saved,” said a traffic police official.
