LT Shinde Junior College in Bhandup had been enrolling students who had failed in Class 11, charging them exorbitant fees and directly making them appear for the Class 12 board exams.

When the board received a complaint, a six-member panel visited the college and found a small building with no classrooms or faculty. The college has been operating like this for the past five years.

The college would tie up with coaching classes, send the students there and then get them to take the Class 12 boards directly. This way they do no have to repeat Class 11.

What is worrying is that this is probably not a solitary case. “There seem to be more such bogus institutes in the city but we will make all efforts to ensure that they are brought to book,” said Basanti Roy, divisional secretary of the board.

What about the students appearing from the college?

“We do not want the students to suffer. We have written to the deputy director’s office to see if any students are appearing from there. Those who are can take the exam from other colleges,” added Roy.
