The viscera samples were stored after the postmortem on Sunday remained inconclusive and the cause of the death could not be ascertained, SSP Akhil Kumar had said.

The procedure was conducted by a panel of five doctors — Dr V.C. Gupta, Dr Ramendra Singh, Dr D.K. Jain, Dr R.C. Gupta and Dr A.K. Singh — specialists from the cardiology, pathology and orthopaedic departments of MMG and Sanjay Nagar district hospitals in Ghaziabad.

After Asthana had reported failing health at Dasna Jail on Saturday, he was referred to MMG hospital where attending doctor Dr. A.K. Singh had said: “Prima facie, it looks a case of poisoning and the exact cause could be ascertained only after a postmortem.” Singh was on the panel that conducted the postmortem.

The report, accessed by HT, says viscera samples like stomach with its contents, pieces of liver with the gall bladder, pieces of the small intestine and spleen have been preserved.
