Prez to take stock of security scenario at Governor's meet

Close on the heels of the Delhi serial blasts, President Pratibha Patil will take stock of the internal security situation of the country with Governors of all states at a two-day conference beginning in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The focus of the conference, which will also be participated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and senior Cabinet Ministers, is to discuss threadbare the internal security environment of the country with special reference to Left-wing extremism and insurgency.

The steps taken for police modernisation, the security scenario along the international borders and related issues, various aspects of bilateral relations with India's neighbouring countries will also come up for discussions, official sources said.

The meeting bears significance in view of the fact that it comes just three days after the Delhi serial blasts, which so far claimed 24 lives, and weeks after Amarnath land row.

Issues relating to climate change and sustainable development in India's context, the Indian agricultural scenario and food security, current economic situation and strategy for price stability will be discussed at the two-day conference.

The role of Governors in the context of administration of Scheduled and tribal areas and as Chancellors in the development of higher education, administration of welfare schemes for ex-servicemen and war widow, issues of pension benefits are the other agenda items to be deliberated upon in the two-conference.
