Price hike fuels protests

The nation-wide protest organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against rise in prices of petroleum products evoked partial response in the district and various parts of the state on Wednesday. In Varanasi, the BJP activists organised a ?chakka jam? at various places, including the Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station. A large number of BJP workers took to streets and former Finance Minister Harishchandra Srivastava, Rakesh Trivedi and Ashok Kohli participated in the blockade at Mahmoorganj area and criticized the Centre for price hike.

The nation-wide protest organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against rise in prices of petroleum products evoked partial response in the district and various parts of the state on Wednesday.

In Varanasi, the BJP activists organised a ‘chakka jam’ at various places, including the Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station.

A large number of BJP workers took to streets and former Finance Minister Harishchandra Srivastava, Rakesh Trivedi and Ashok Kohli participated in the blockade at Mahmoorganj area and criticized the Centre for price hike.

The party activists burnt the effigies of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora at various places like Sigra, Andharapul, Pandeypur Crossing, Godaulia, Maidagin Crossing, Lahurabeer Crossing, Chauka Ghat, Lanka Crossing, Girjaghar crossing, Bhadau, Harteerath, Tarna by-pass.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPIML) activists and Khet Mazdoor Sabha burnt the effigy of the UPA Government. State secretary of the Khet Mazdoor Sabha, Narendra Pandey and CMI (M-L) leader Manish Sharma said that rise in prices of petroleum products exposed the anti-people policies of the Union government.

Murli Dhar Jaiswal, Badruddin Ahmad, Sanjay Keshari, Manoj Keshari, Narsingh Das, Rajesh Keshari and Ravi Jaiswal were among others who performed the ‘Buddhi-Shuddhi Yajna’.

According a report from Lakhimpur-Kheri, the BJP took out a procession.

The party workers raised slogans against the Union Government and detained the Howrah-Amritsar Mail for 40 minutes at the Pratapgarh railway station.

Party’s district president Swaminath Shukla led the procession.
