Nearly 1,300 prisoners lodged in Berhampore Central jail in West Bengal on Sunday went on an indefinite hungerstrike in protest against the 'poor quality' of food and other allied problems.

In view of the prevailing tension, security has been tightened, police said.
Murshidabad district magistrate Pervez Ahmed Siddiqui said he had sent two officers to study the situation inside the jail.
The IG (prison) is also likely to visit the prison to assess the situation, officials said.
