Probe ordered into UP police firing on students

The state government has granted Rs five lakh each as ex-gratia to the families of the deceased.

A probe was ordered on Tuesday into the alleged murder of a student leader and the police firing during subsequent protests by students in which one of them was killed.

"The inquiry would be conducted by the Commissioner, Basti Division, BD Singh," District Magistrate Umesh Chandra Tewari told reporters Sant Kabirnagar.

The student who had received injuries in police firing following the murder of Rakesh Maurya, a student leader of HRPG college succumbed on way to the Gorakhpur Medical College Hospital late last night, Tewari said.

The state government has granted Rs five lakh each as ex-gratia to the families of the deceased, Tewari said adding that the last rites of both the students were performed in the presence of their family members on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, traders observed a Khalilabad bandh in protest against Monday's incident.

All educational institutions remained closed and prohibitory orders had been promulgated to maintain peace, Tewari said.

Additional force including two companies of PAC have been deployed in the town to maintain law and order, he said.

An FIR has been registered against four persons in connection with Maurya's murder while another FIR against unknown persons has been filed by the police in connection with violence and arson.
