THE DIRECTIVE of Allahabad High Court has forced the state government to take notice of the plight of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) patients.
State government had submitted a project to the High Court regarding the treatment of JE patients and their rehabilitation. The officials will convene a meeting, on October 12, in Lucknow to discuss the project in which the establishment of surveillance centre and research centre will be discussed.
It is noteworthy that in the High Court, Sunil Ambani had taken the cognisance of the plight of JE patients and had directed the state government to clear its position on this issue before the court. The High Court also entertained the application submitted by former vice-chancellor of DDU Gorakhpur University Prof Radhe Mohan Mishra who was also an office bearer of a non-government organisation (NGO) Samarpan.
According to a report, on September 27, state government had submitted the work plan to check the reoccurrence of JE in the region. The impact of High Court directive could be judged by the fact that state government who was not paying any attention over dreaded JE disease. Whereas, the chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had written a letter to the prime minister Manmohan Singh asking him to provide 41.22 lakh doses of anti-JE vaccine to carry mass vaccination in various districts of UP.
Sources said that state government had planned to depute additional health officer in 34-affected district of eastern UP. Besides constituting JE steering committee and JE commanding committee in chairmanship of CMO of different districts. In the plan, the government had also suggested to allocate 10 beds in each district hospital for the JE affected patients. State government had also released Rs 4.76 crore for establishment of the research centre and intensive care unit along with special JE ward at BRD Medical College. Meanwhile, chief campaigner of JE eradication programme, Dr RN Singh said that the government of various states and even the Union government were taking all the possible steps to check the disease due to Dengue but the silence maintained by political leaders over the death caused by JE is highly condemnable.
