Following opposition criticism of her government’s alleged corruption, CM Mayawati on Thursday cautioned her cadre about the selection of candidates in the elections.
Wrong selection “could land them in trouble”, she said.
Addressing rallies in Ambedkar Nagar and Faizabad, she said while a vote for the SP would bring anti-social elements back to power, support to the BJP and Congress could spell disaster in other ways.
“Protect your vote like your mother and daughter.”
Mayawati said people had still not forgotten the “illegal activities” during the previous SP regime and slackness in voting could be troublesome.
Under criticism on misuse of employment generation funds, she said wrong policies of the Centre had badly affected the state’s development and led to migration from the state.
Recalling the entry of tainted people into the party during the 2007 elections, Mayawati said they were largely responsible for tarnishing BSP’s image. She said the party had now weeded out all such elements.
Assailing the Centre, led by the Congress, she said “wrong policies” had led to massive price hikes across the country.
The chief minister said the state could not progress much because the Centre did not give enough funds. The state had sought a R80,000 crore special package for Bundelkhand and Poorvanchal but it was denied.
The Congress had been trying to divide people on the issue of reservation, she said, adding that the quota within quota for most backward castes and Ati Dalits was aimed at creating a rift among the communities.
