Protests, along with shutdown, were observed at many places in the Jammu region on Friday, a day after four people died in firing allegedly by the BSF in Ramban district, around 200 km from Jammu.
Vehicular traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar road was suspended and the Amarnath pilgrims were not allowed to proceed, which led to some protests.
Public vehicles were not allowed to move beyond Udhampur, 60 km from Jammu.
In Bhaderwah town, which has a history of sectarian tension, a shutdown was observed. However, after the Friday prayers, some protestors went towards the bazaars where some shops were opened and threw stones at them.
The four people who died on Thursday were buried in Gool, where hundreds of people had gathered. However, no violent incident was reported.
The violence on Thursday was on account of a suspected desecration of the Quran. The BSF dismissed the allegation, saying a mob had attacked its camp, indulged in firing and tried to storm the storehouse of arms and ammunition around 6.30am on Thursday.
Pakistan on Friday expressed “its deep concern” at the incident and called for an investigation.
