Puja goes green with eco-friendly pandals

As navratra festival has started to catch up with residents, various puja committees have decided to erect eco-friendly pandals in the Millennium City.

As navratra festival has started to catch up with residents, various puja committees have decided to erect eco-friendly pandals in the Millennium City.

Preparations for the nine-day festival, beginning September 28, are in full swing. Artists from Kolkata and Assam have also arrived in the city to give finishing touches to idols of the goddess.

The pandal of Sushant Lok Cultural Society will be eco-friendly. Subir Ghosh, president of the society said, "Most of youth are not aware about the origin of Durga, so we decided to have an idol of 'Shivani', the other name of the goddess." He said that the puja pandal will be environment friendly.

DLF City Durga Puja and Bengali Cultural Society has also prepared an eco-friendly pandal.

Purbapalli Durgabari Samiti, Sector 14 is preparing an 18 feet idol by using only clay. Even the jewellery and hair of the goddess have been made of clay.

Subhankar Sanyal, a member of the committee, said, "We have given special attention to the decoration of pandal. Besides, artistes from Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai have been invited for a cultural programme."

SN Ganguli, vice president of the committee, said, "We are trying to make the festival memorable for residents."
