THE STATE Medical Education Department is getting ready to implement the Private Medical Education Institute (Regulation of Admission and Fixation of Fee) Bill-2005.
This is being done to maintain government control over the private medical institutions regarding sharing of seats and fee structure. Once the bill is implemented, the unaided minority institutions have to fill in at least 30 per cent of seats through government quota.
According to the bill, in the unaided non-minority institutions, 50 per cent of the students should be selected through the government quota. This should be done in accordance with the merit of the candidates in the CET. This rule will be applicable to the reserved seats, too.
Recently, some private medical colleges in Lucknow refused to accept government quota on the basis of a SC judgment. Surprised by the refusal, the department of medical education dashed off a letter to the Government, demanding its intervention in the matter.
The department is particularly worried about the second counselling of UPPGME to be held in the second week of June. The seats were supposed to be filled in, in coordination with the private medical colleges, but their refusal caused worry to the department.
“The bill has taken care of the financial needs of the unaided private medical colleges where 25 per cent seats would be of NRI quota, while a major chunk would be filled in on the basis of CET,” said an official of the medical education department.

{{/usCountry}}The bill, once becomes an act, will be applicable to the private aided and unaided medical institutions affiliated to a university established under section 2(f) of the UGC Act-1956 and also to deemed university under section 3 of the UGC Act.
