The undersea tremor hit at 1509 GMT (2039 IST) and was centred at a depth of 47 kilometres under the sea, the US Geographical Survey said.

No casualties or damages had been reported as a result of the quake, which was centred 111 kilometres south of the town of Bengkulu on Sumatra, it said.

Another earthquake struck near the eastern Indonesian island of Sulawesi earlier today, but there were also no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The meteorology and geophysics agency here said a 5.9 magnitude earthquake had jolted the central parts of Indonesia's Sulawesi island.

The earthquake struck at 21:15 GMT (Saturday) and was centered 60 kilometers under the sea floor, 102 kilometers northeast of Luwuk in Central Sulawesi province, the agency said.

Sutiono, an agency spokesman said the temblor was felt moderately in Luwuk and in Poso town, and only lightly at the provincial capital Palu, he said.
