IT industry body Nasscom on Thursday said that reservation for Other Backward Classes in higher education institutions was not the right way to address the backwardness of these sections of society.

"Industry is committed to work towards the upliftment of disadvantaged people but reservation is not a quick and easy solution," Nasscom President Kiran Karnik said.

"It (reservation) is a complex issue. There are various disadvantaged groups based on geography, economy and caste. We should work towards improving the existing infrastructure which is not able to provide sufficient education at the school level to equip them to take advantage of higher education," he said.

The high rate of dropouts and failures in schools among the disadvantaged sections need to be first addressed, he said.
