A day’s heavy rainfall and the city’s electricity distribution system came down crumbling like a pack of cards. Almost the entire city went without electricity for several hours since Saturday following the season’s first heavy downpour.

Consumers living under all the electricity divisions including Mayo Hall, Rambagh and Kalyani Devi were badly affected. In some areas power did make a come back after a few hours but then it started playing hide and seek which continued through out the night.
Though rain brought the temperature to down but humidity kept people awake in the night. Though such things usually do happen during rains but what the apathetic attitude of the officials took people by surprise as they had made no preparations to face the problem. Open fuse boxes and old conductors generally conk out during rains but no efforts were made to replace or repair them before rains.
Residents of Cooper Road in Civil Lines had no power since Saturday night.
They were still waiting for the same till this report was filed. Sources said the failure was caused by some snag in the 11000 cable box which could not be rectified due to the store being closed on Sunday.
One consumer wondered if electricity really came under the essential services at all. If it did, power officials had no business to say that they could not procure the cable box because the store department was closed on Sunday, he added.
On the other hand, residents in Katra staged a sit-in on the road in protest against erratic power supply.
