Heavy rains continued to lash most parts of Kerala on Saturday bringing with it signs of improvement in the power situation with substantial inflow into reservoirs even as damage to property and spread of epidemics were reported from different places.
An empty school building collapsed in heavy rains and gusty winds at Vadanappilly in Thrissur district. Two houses were destroyed and 15 houses partly damaged in Kottayam district.
The largest inflow of water into reservoirs this year equivalent to 258.4 lakh units was recorded yesterday, as the catchment area of Idukki district received 10.6 cm of rains, according to Kerala State Electricity Board sources.
Inflow also improved in Sabarigiri, Kuttiadi, Idamalayar, Sholayar, Pallivasal, Panniar and Neriamangalam as the respective areas received fairly good rain, a KSEB release said.
Electricity Minister Kadavoor Sivadasan, in a statement here, expressed hope that further restrictions on power consumption could be avoided if the current spell of rains continued.
Meanwhile, district level core committees were formed to tackle the situation arising from the spread of dengue fever, rat fever, malaria and cholera. A sanitation and anti-mosquito campaign had also been launched in the state.
According to the Met office here, rain will occur at most places in Kerala in the next 48 hours.
