BJP president Rajnath Singh flagged off party leader Vasundhara Raje’s 80-day Suraj Sankalp Yatra from the famous Charbhuja temple on Thursday, with Singh urging people to make Raje the next chief minister of the desert state.
Singh’s demonstration of support made it amply clear that Raje was the party’s face for the CM’s post in a faction-ridden state BJP, though hints were clear since she had been made the party president after Singh took charge at the helm of the saffron party.
Singh hit out at both the UPA government at the Centre and the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government in Rajasthan, holding the former responsible for galloping inflation and the latter for corruption in the state.
Meanwhile, sections of the close to one-lakh crowd at the rally chanted the name of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, adding to the clamour for his being named as the BJP’s PM candidate.
“The present central government is the most corrupt since independence and should be thrown out,” Singh said.
Raje urged the crowd to repose its faith in the BJP once again in the coming assembly polls in Rajasthan, saying the BJP government there before the Congress government took charge had never violated the people’s faith. The BJP leaders accused the Gehlot government of scuttling the good initiatives taken by the Raje government in Rajasthan from 2003 to 2008.
Raje’s yatra — which will move in phases through the state, hitting the streets for close to three months — will cover 14,000 km, and recalls a similar Yatra she undertook before the 2003 polls.
