Opposition National Conference (NC) accused the PDP-BJP government of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed of "engineering circumstances leading to strife and communal tension in Rajouri."

"Such destructive tendencies have the potential of bringing the state on the brink of chaos and devastation," said NC chief spokesperson Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi.

A major communal flare up was witnessed in Rajouri on Tuesday where a community accused another community of burning a flag with Islamic verse. The army had to flag march to control the situation.

The VHP reportedly had apologised to the Muslim community over the incident but failed to douse the tension. Locals are demanding detention of those who set afire the flag.

"The situation in Rajouri is a direct result of a pre-planned motive of the PDP-BJP combine to engineer a communal divide in the region," said NC leader.

He alleged that VHP activists who are behind the whole conspiracy of fanning communal fire in Rajouri are moving around freely as the deputy chief minister himself lauded their antics. "He gave them a carte blanche. Nothing could be more tragic and inappropriate. Does the deputy chief minister not know burning of any flag with Islamic scriptures is an act that would hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community? Such patronage to provocative elements by the highest echelons of the state government is not only unfortunate but also extremely dangerous," said Mehdi.

Separatist JKLF also held protest demonstration in the city and were arrested by the police. "After the establishment of present PDP and BJP rule, Jammu Muslims are being targeted and terrorized and in a systematic manner and an atmosphere of fear is being created among them," alleged JKLF leaders.

"The rulers at the behest of the RSS are trying to recreate and repeat 1947 by displacing Muslims from Jammu belt. This is being done to fulfill the RSS agenda of demographic change in the Jammu region," JKLF leaders alleged.

Protesting JKLF leaders said, "The incidents of desecrating Islamic symbols, hurting sentiments of Muslims, displacing them from their homes in the name of forest land, and creating fear among Muslims in Chenab area by deploying Hindu officers in place of Muslim officers has proved once again that the PDP is hell bent upon destroying Jammu and Kashmir at the behest of RSS."
