A rare feat in the field of surgery has been achieved by a city surgeon. Dr Conrad Phillips and his team, including Dr Sumit and anesthetist Dr SB Singh, performed an extremely rare surgery of 'wandering (mobile) spleen' through laparoscopy.
Only 12 to 13 such cases are documented in the medical literature world over.
Sanju Devi, 25-year-old patient from Sikandara village near Phaphamau, was suffering from wandering (mobile) spleen since birth. Due to which, she carried a potential danger of undergoing torsion and gangrene.
Dr C Phillips and his team performed 'Laparoscopic Splenopexy' on her, in which the spleen was successfully fixed in its normal position in the abdomen by making just three holes in the abdomen wall and thus avoiding a major operation.
"Only 12 to 13 such cases have been reported in the medical literature in world over. And this is one of the few cases managed successfully by the laparoscopy.
The patient has now fully recovered and is leading a normal life," claimed Dr Phillips.
Dr Phillips said in the past they successfully performed advance laparoscopic surgeries of hydatid cyst of liver, retroperitoneal cysts and bile duct stones.
