Former Haryana IPS officer Ravi Kant Sharma who was recently acquitted by Delhi High Court in Shivani murder case has sought his reinstatement in the Indian Police Service.
A 1976-batch IPS, Sharma was dismissed from the service on account of his conviction by a trial court in Shivani murder case. In a communication to Union Home Secretary, RK Singh, Ravi Kant has now sought his reinstatement in the service.
If in service he is due to retire in 2012. Sharma told HT on Thursday that he has taken the ground that as he was sacked from the service on his conviction by a lower court, he should get his job back now as the High Court has acquitted him. Haryana officials said that Ministry of Home Affiars (MHA) will take feedback from the Delhi Police which investigated the case.
“The prosecution is planning to approach the Supreme Court challenging Sharma’s acquittal. However, unless the apex stays the acquittal, his reinstatement process will begin,’’ said an official As an IPS officer Sharma had served in the CBI, the Interpol, Air India and as an Officer on Special Duty in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).. Sharma was acquitted by Delhi High Court on October 12 in Shivani murder case. Bhatnagar was a journalist with the Indian Express. When his name cropped in the case in 2002, he was IG (Jails) in Haryana Police.
He was suspended from the service on August 23, 2002. He was convicted and sentenced by lower court on March 24, 2008 for life in Shivani murder case. In April 2009, central government dismissed him from the service and also stripped him of his President’s Police Medal.
