Razing of Terminal 2A begins

The razing of Terminal 2A of the Mumbai airport began on Tuesday, to make way for the revamped, state-of-the-art terminal, reports Barney Henderson.

The razing of Terminal 2A of the Mumbai airport began on Tuesday, to make way for the revamped, state-of-the-art terminal.

The city airport being very busy and congested, the demolition and construction will take place alongside. This way, all flights operating from the terminal will continue to do so.

“This has never been done before,” said Manish Kalghati, spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Limited. “In this sense, it is a big challenge because unlike in other parts of the world, we don’t have land and so can’t construct the new terminal away from peoples’ eyes. We will demolish in bits and parts and construct as we go. It is India’s busiest airport but also one of the most constrained, with just 1,000 acres of land for all operations.”

The demolition is likely to be completed by April. The renovation work began in May, and all flights operating from 2A had been shifted to the then unused 2B.

The consolidated terminal is scheduled to be complete in 2013 and will house both international and domestic flights.
