He wanted to turn over a new leaf. But the blemish of a criminal past refused to leave him.
Pushed to the brink, he got back to crime and has been arrested again.
In 2007, Ajay Bahadur Singh (21) was jailed after being convicted for the rape a teenager from Powai.
A few months ago, he was released from prison. The repentant man married the rape victim and had plans to start life afresh, the police said.
“However, due to his criminal background, Singh was finding it difficult to find a job. He was unable to support his family,” said Police Sub-Inspector Keshav Kumar Kasar of Powai police station.
Singh and three of his accomplices were arrested last month for committing thefts at several houses in Powai.
The police recovered part of the booty on Wednesday.
“While Singh was lodged in Arthur Road jail, he had come in contact with the other three accused — Ankush Kolhe (21), Anil Pun (20) and Sunil Pun (22). All four were residents of Indira Nagar in Saki Naka.”
“Unable to make ends meet, Singh and the trio plotted to break into houses in the vicinity,” said Senior Inspector Rajdoot Roopwate.

“We got a tip-off about Kolhe’s involvement. We picked him up for interrogation involvement,” said Roopwate. “Kolhe confessed to the crime and led us to the other three.”
Between November 26, 2008 and May 30, 2009, the accused broke into at least four houses where they looted jewellery, valuables and cash collectively valued at Rs 2 lakh.
The police said they had so far recovered valuables and cash up to Rs 80,000.
