A senior Republican Senator and one of the co-chairs of India caucus John Cornyn has hailed the passing of a bill seeking implementation of landmark Indo-US nuclear deal noting that the agreement was important to protect the security interests of the United States.
Cornyn, who co-chairs the India Caucus in the United States Senate along with Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, is one of the 10 co-sponsors of the legislation currently pending in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The Senate panel is taking up the mark up of the deal on Thursday.
"This agreement is important to our national security and our economic ties with a key ally. It will strengthen our partnership and lead to increased, peaceful civilian use of nuclear power while avoiding the threat of proliferation," Cornyn said.
A 50-member House International Relations Committee has approved a legislation designed to make exemptions in the 1954 Atomic Energy Act to enable US to sell nuclear fuel and technology in return for non proliferation and safeguard commitments from India.
"Congressional approval of this agreement will allow the US and India to continue working together in a meaningful way to make the world a safer place. It also allows the United States to demonstrate its good will by providing civilian nuclear technology to a country that needs the energy."
