AN ANGRY mob ransacked the Govind Nagar substation to protest prolonged hours of power cuts in the area. The entire Govind Nagar area has been reeling under acute power crisis for the past month. On an average, power supply to the area is snapped for about 14 to 15 hours in a day.

A mob of around 250 residents gathered under the banner of Dakshin Vikas Morcha staged a demonstration at Chawla Market. They were armed with the effigy of KESCo managing director. They spat on the effigy and also requested passers-by to spit on it. Later, they took out a procession from there to the Govind Nagar sub-station and later, ransacked it.As the agitation was preplanned and KESCo officials had prior information about it, the sub-station was empty. In order to save themselves from the mob fury, officials left the sub-station early in the morning.

The empty sub-station added fuel to fire and agitators ransacked it. The entire furniture was broken and even official documents of the sub-station didn’t escape mob fury. Meanwhile, the local police remained a mute spectator and did not interfere. The mob had the substation under siege for more than an hour.

Accusing KESCo officials for the agitation, Dakshin Vikas Morcha president Naveen Pandit stated that three transformers in Govind Nagar had been lying defunct for the past several days and despite several complaints, they had not been replaced.
