They called the move “unwarranted” as they are already paying property tax, besides external and internal development charges in the name of maintenance.

“We will strongly oppose any such plan if it comes up in the House,” said Rishi Raj Rana, a councillor from ward no. 1.

The proposed tax on solid waste management is likely to be discussed by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) on January 21.

The state government has issued the notification under the Haryana Municipal Act 1973 and Haryana Municipal Corporation Act 1994. These two Acts empower the state government to levy such taxes and authorise the local urban bodies for further action.

Already burdened with multiple upkeep charges, new taxes are not something that the residents are looking forward to.

“The government is wrong in proposing any such tax. Such a facility should be provided free of cost. We are already paying several charges in the name of maintenance,” said Vikas Gupta, general secretary, Apartment Buyers' Association of Vatika City.
