Ritual under court lens rolls on unhindered in K'taka

A more than 500-year-old ritual involving rolling over leftovers of Brahmins in a Karnataka temple has started this year in accordance with tradition, following a Supreme Court stay on a Karnataka high court order allowing a modified version.

The Made Snana ritual of Kukke Subrahmanya temple in South Kanara district, 320 km from Bangalore, began on Sunday and will end on Tuesday.

More than 1,000 devotees have rolled over leftovers on plantain leaves in two days at the temple for Lord Shiva's son Shanmukha or Kartikeya.

People from various castes perform the ritual, offering "seva" for curing skin diseases and nerve disorders.
