More than 400 people have succumbed to accidents last year. The police department blames civic agencies for poor maintenance of roads. Poor design, absence of safety measures like road crossings, etc, and absence of road engineering concept cause accidents.
In the first four months this year, the city reported 113 accidents, in which 125 people lost their lives, while 136 people died in 128 mishaps during the same period last year.
In 2011, the national capital reported 597 accidents, in which 617 casualties took place. On the contrary, in Gurgaon, only 36 murder cases have been registered in the first four months in 2011, while 78 cases were registered last year. In Delhi, 519 cases were reported in 2010.
Most accident victims are pedestrians. “This year, among the dead, there were 48 pedestrians, three cyclists, 33 two-wheeler riders and 41 more road users. Fifty-five HMVs and 26 four-wheelers were involved in accidents. Twenty-eight vehicles were involved in hit and run cases,” said Alok Mittal, joint commissioner of police, Gurgaon.

“It is good that the rate of accidents and deaths have been reducing, but there is a lot to be done in this regard. We want to make the city safe for commuters. Maximum numbers of accidents took place due to over-speeding, drunk and rash driving and other violations. We are trying to control such violations which cause death,” he said.
