The 26th road safety week is being organised in Jammu by the motor vehicle department (MVD) and the traffic police from January 11 to 17. The theme is "safety is not just a slogan, it's a way of life."
The inaugural function was held on Sunday at Green Field, Gandhi Nagar, with walkathon and flagging off a rally by Muneer Ahmed Khan, IG, traffic Jammu. Hundreds of schoolchildren, college students, traffic police, driving institutions, auto unions, automobile dealers took part in the event.
The IG traffic called upon the civil society, especially youth, to rededicate their efforts to ensure safety of people and restrict fatal road accidents. He said that the road safety week is being observed every year to educate the people about the road safety measures.
Joint transport commissioner GA Sofi emphasised on the importance of road safety and need to disseminate information about the safety among the public and the motor vehicle users especially youth. He appreciated the large participation of the schoolchildren in the event and hoped that they will further spread awareness among friends and relatives.
Earlier, RTO Jammu Arvind Kotwal elaborated over the importance of the road safety and the activities being organised by the department during the week, including awareness programmes, medical camps, painting competitions, debates, rallies etc.
He said that the department is engaged in creating road safety awareness by way of organising such programmes throughout the year. He said that collective efforts would make a significant impact on the incidents of road accidents and help mitigate the scourge of the accident related deaths and injuries
