Rohtak acid attack victim's kin come forward for compenstaion

A day after Supreme Court asked the states to compensate acid attack victims with Rs 3 lakh, the family of 17-year-old Prerna Gandhi, an acid attack victim from the state, has decided to apply for compensation.

A day after Supreme Court asked the states to compensate acid attack victims with Rs 3 lakh, the family of 17-year-old Prerna Gandhi, an acid attack victim from the state, has decided to apply for compensation.

Notably, Prerna, then 14 years was attacked at Sector-1 here, when she was returning back from her tuition on June 18, 2011 by two unidentified youths.

Manohar Lal Gandhi, grandfather of Prerna, a retired government employee in state labour department, who has been fighting legal battle for her said: "According to Apex court decision, the state government is liable to pay compensation amount of Rs 3 lakh to the acid attack victim in case of body loss."

He said: "Prerna lost her right ear, major portion of her face, chest area, throat, neck, right elbow and maxilla which constitutes 45% burn injuries on her body."

On the Thursday's decision of Supreme Court on banning free sale of acids, he said: "Finally, the litigation of Luxmi in Supreme Court, who was attacked seven years before in New Delhi has set a deterrent on rampant misuse of acid against women."

Ritu Saini,18, a volleyball player, who was attacked on May 26 last year, said: "The state government should ensure that there should be strict implementation of Supreme Court's decision, now, no more lives should be compelled to live a life like us."
