AN AGENCY of Government of India (GoI), Rural Electrification Corporation of India (RECI), New Delhi has sanctioned Rs 27.35 crore and Rs 40.76 crore for rural electrification of Indore and Ujjain respectively and the scheme aims at 100 per cent electrification of rural areas but the scheme appears far-fetched as about 40 per cent households in rural areas of Indore district do not have basic infrastructure to have access to electricity hence chances of its completion on time are remote.

The scenario is more or less same all over the country and the scheme of GoI, Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification and Household Infrastructure Scheme, which is to be, executed country-wide may fail to achieve the desired results.
In rural areas of Indore alone out of total 125637 households 50234 do not have infrastructure to have access to electricity.

Talking to Hindustan Times, MP Western Region Electricity Distribution Company additional superintending engineer Nagendra Tiwari said that under this scheme a proposal of Rs 814.10 crore for electrification of all the 13 districts of the Western Region Electricity Distribution Company was submitted to Rural Electrification Corporation of India, New Delhi in August 2005 and approval for the same is awaited. He informed that till date approval of only Indore and Ujjain rural areas has been accorded.

Total strength of people living BPL is 26715 in Indore district and out of them major portion do not have access to electricity.
