Elections for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Tripura began today with 49 members of the 60-member assembly casting their votes by 11 am.

Rajya Sabha MP Mati Lal Sarkar is contesting as a candidate of the ruling left front while former MLA, Tapas De, is contesting as the candidate of opposition Congress.

The Indigenous Nationalist Party (INPT), a former poll ally of Congress, was abstaining from voting in the Rajya Sabha election on the plea that they were not contesting the elections.
The INPT had recently become a constituent of the NDA after severing ties with Congress.
