THIRTEEN ALUMNI of the prestigious National Law Institute University (NLIU) have offered to help out final-year student Sonia Patel, who was served a notice for not depositing fee on time. Although the management has appreciated their gesture, it has expressed inability to oblige them citing norms.
The student was served the notice after she failed to pay her fee for more than one and a half years due to financial constraints. A meritorious student throughout, Sonia e-mailed her seniors who are well placed now, seeking their help to tide over the situation.
When asked about Sonia Patel’s fate, acting director Surya Prakash said that the new director will decide the matter as his days as director in the institute are numbered.
On the proposal of the former students, he said that it was not brought to his notice. He further said that some association had promised her fellowship and paid her fee in the first year but later they stopped sending money.
“It is not a charity organisation and everybody has to pay fee on time”, he said. The former students have requested the institute management to adjust their caution money of Rs 5,000 each deposited with the institute against Sonia’s outstanding dues and withdraw notice to debar her from appearing in the examination.
Ironically, NLIU, which charges a fee of around Rs 65,000 to Rs 70,000 from students each year, has no scholarships for poor students. This makes students like Sonia very difficult to meet the extravagant expenses on studies.

{{/usCountry}}Surya Prakash clarified there was no provision of scholarship for students. However, he said that some students manage sponsorship from associations and corporate houses on their own.
“It is a State university and if there has to be scholarships, the State Government will have to provide for it”, he said.
