Russia has circulated a draft UN Security Council resolution calling for a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas, Russia's UN ambassador said.

Vitaly Churkin said on Thursday the crisis in Lebanon was too urgent to wait for negotiations on a separate US-French Security Council resolution seeking a permanent ceasefire.

Diplomats reported progress on the US-French draft but said differences remained.
