Amid South Africa's readiness to have civil nuclear cooperation with India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will embark on a four-day visit to that country from Saturday to strengthen strategic ties.
During his stay in South Africa, Singh will attend the centenary celebrations to commemorate launch of 'Satyagraha' by Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa, a country where the pioneer of non-violence unveiled the new concept of resistance against colonialism and political oppression.
At least seven agreements, including in the field of railways, education and science and technology, are expected to be signed during the visit that will mark combination of work with revival of emotional bondage between India and South Africa.
A proposed Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with five-nation South African Customs Union (SACU) is under negotiation and may be signed if the discussions are completed.
Ahead of Singh's visit, uranium-rich South Africa said it was willing to have civil nuclear cooperation with India and hinted at supporting New Delhi's case at the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
"Certainly, this is an area that provides opportunity for us to cooperate. I don't see any obstacle," South African High Commissioner Francis Moloi said. When asked about the possibility of India and South Africa forging cooperation in the civil nuclear field.
