Malay Mishra, joint secretary in the Indian ministry of overseas Indian affairs, has urged South African Indians to join thousands of others expected at the fourth edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), as the conclave is called, to be held Jan 7-9.

"I do expect a very large contingent from South Africa to participate in the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas," Mishra said after speaking to local and expatriate Indians here.

He had earlier interacted with Indians in Cape Town and Durban after coming to South Africa from Mauritius to invite them for the event. Mishra and his team will also visit Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa.

Emphasising the role of youth in the event, Mishra said they would not only spend time learning about Indian culture, but also play an active role in putting together the PBD.

Mishra added that a quarter of the 40 Indian youngsters from nine countries, participating in a special project that would run parallel to the PBD, were from South Africa.
