South Korea, in its first formal reaction to North Korea's announced nuclear test, said on Monday it would deal "sternly" with the issue and would not tolerate a nuclear-armed North.

"Our government will sternly deal with this in accordance with the principle that it will not tolerate North Korea's possession of nuclear weapons," said a statement read by presidential spokesman Yoon Tae-Young.
