S Sujatha of Congress was elected as the Mayor of Tiruchiraplli city on Wednesday.

T T Balasamy administered the oath of office to Sujatha, soon after announcement of her election was made in the council hall.

Sujatha, holding a post-graduate degree in Commerce, was the deputy secretary of district Youth Congress in 1990 and was the president of district Congress Democratic Peravai from 2001 to 2005.

Erstwhile Mayor Sarubala R Thondaiman had resigned from the post and contested in the recent Lok Sabha polls on a Congress ticket and lost to P Kumar of AIADMK.
