The 22-year-old batsman injured his shoulder during South Africa's 46-run victory over Zimbabwe at Canterbury on Sunday, but scans and X-rays showed there was no serious damage.
Smith has since been receiving extensive physiotherapy treatment.
South Africa lie bottom of the series standings with six points from two games, although they have a match in hand over both England and Zimbabwe, who are joint top on nine points.
