Tendulkar is undergoing a rehabilitation programme under BCCI-appointed doctor Anant Joshi and the team physio Andrew Leipus.
The Cricket Board, while announcing on Friday the team for first two Tests, said the medical report on the batsman's fitness it received submitted that Tendulkar is "progressing well".
Tendulkar had been included in the 15-member Indian squad but BCCI Secretary SK Nair said his featuring in the opener would depend on the match fitness.
Tendulkar said last week that he had been advised to take gradual steps during practice and not go "bang-bang", raising doubts about his fitness before the high-profile match against the tourists starting on Wednesday.
