The Rabodi police have registered a case of abetment to suicide and have detained Sheikh, who owns a salon.

"We may change the charge once the post-mortem report comes," said senior police inspector Sidharth Wagh.

The police said Rafiq and Ameena have been married since 2006 and have a 3-year-old son. Ameena's family alleged that Rafiq would demand money from her constantly.

They had a fight on Friday night over the same matter, the family alleged.

Ameena's family said she was murdered following the fight.

"I made peace between the two of them and left around 3:00 am. Within an hour or so, he killed her and hanged her from the ceiling. His son Rehaan told us that first he hit her with a rolling pin and gagged her with a pillow," said Ameena's grandfather Mohammed Jameer Sheikh.
